What is the PTE academic test?

What is it? The Pearson Test of English (PTE) is a computer-based test which assesses the English language skills of non-native speakers intending to apply for university courses in English-speaking countries. There are three versions of the test: the PTE Academic, General and Young Learners.

PTE General, now known as the International Certificate (PTE General), is a language proficiency test designed to assess everyday English communication skills across six levels. It combines written tasks with a face-to-face spoken interview, focusing on practical English usage in real-life situations, unlike PTE Academic which is more academically focused. The test is paper-based and administered at Pearson test centers.

Pearson Test of English (PTE) Core is now accepted by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) for all Canadian immigration pathways, except for the Student Direct Stream (SDS). This means it can be used for permanent residency, work permits, and other immigration programs. PTE Core joins IELTS and CELPIP as the accepted English language proficiency tests for Canadian immigration.

IELTS (International English Language Testing System)

IELTS is a widely recognized English language proficiency test required for both admission to educational institutions and immigration purposes in many countries, including Canada, the UK, Australia, and New Zealand.

There are two main types of IELTS:

• IELTS Academic – Designed for those applying for higher education or professional registration.

• IELTS General Training – Suitable for immigration, work experience, or training programs in English-speaking countries.

The test consists of four modules:

• Listening

• Reading

• Writing

• Speaking

Each module assesses a different aspect of your English skills and plays a vital role in meeting the language requirements of universities, employers, and immigration authorities.

OET (Occupational English Test)

The Occupational English Test (OET) is an international English language proficiency test specifically designed for healthcare professionals. It assesses the language communication skills of individuals who seek to register and work in English-speaking healthcare environments.

OET is widely recognized and accepted in several countries for healthcare licensing, registration, and immigration, including:

• Australia – Accepted by AHPRA and immigration authorities

• New Zealand – Recognized by the Nursing Council and other healthcare boards

• United Kingdom – Accepted by the General Medical Council (GMC), Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC), and NHS employers

• Ireland – Accepted by healthcare boards and employers

• Singapore – Recognized by the Singapore Medical Council and Singapore Nursing Board
