Typically, visitors in Canada on a visitor visa cannot apply for a work permit while they are in the country. However, there are some exceptions:

  1. Change of Status: If you are a visitor in Canada and receive a job offer, you may be eligible to apply for a work permit from within Canada, but you must meet specific eligibility criteria. In some cases, you may need to leave Canada to apply for the work permit, depending on your situation.

  2. Spouse or Common-Law Partner of a Worker or Student: If your spouse or common-law partner is a skilled worker or international student in Canada, you might be eligible for an open work permit.

Generally, it is recommended to apply for a work permit from outside Canada before traveling, unless specific conditions allow for a change of status.

The Alberta Immigrant Nominee Program (AINP) offers business immigration opportunities for entrepreneurs, investors, and self-employed individuals who wish to establish or buy a business in Alberta. The key streams under the AINP for business immigration are:

  1. Alberta Opportunity Stream (AOS): This stream allows foreign workers who are already in Alberta to apply for permanent residence if they meet certain criteria, including holding a valid job offer from an Alberta employer in an eligible occupation.

  2. Alberta Express Entry Stream: This is for individuals in the federal Express Entry pool who have the skills and experience that match Alberta’s labor market needs. This stream is aimed at skilled workers and professionals.

  3. Alberta Self-Employed Farmer Stream: For individuals who have experience in farming and are looking to invest in or start a farming business in Alberta. Applicants must demonstrate they have sufficient funds to establish a farm and contribute to Alberta’s agricultural industry.

  4. Alberta Entrepreneur Stream: Designed for individuals who plan to operate a business in Alberta. This stream requires applicants to demonstrate business experience, sufficient funds, and a commitment to creating jobs for Albertans. Applicants must have a business idea that aligns with Alberta's economic goals and demonstrate their ability to contribute to the province's economy.

Eligibility criteria vary for each stream, including factors like investment amounts, business experience, and the ability to establish or maintain a business in Alberta. The program helps attract entrepreneurs who can contribute to the province’s economic development.
